THE HOTEL ADS PROBLEM

Most Hotel Ad Budgets Are Quietly Wasted

Good Google Ads management for hotels is not about running ads, it is about running the right ones. Running ads that actually bring a direct booking, tracked properly, is where most hotels lose money without realising it.

OTAs Outbid You For Your Own Hotel’s Name

Search your own hotel’s name and the first paid result is often an OTA, not you. You built the brand, and someone else is paying to stand between you and the guest who was already looking for you.

Your Ad Budget Sends Guests To An OTA Listing

A poorly set up campaign links out to your OTA page instead of your own booking engine, so you pay for the click and still pay commission on the booking it produces.

No Way To Know Which Keyword Actually Booked A Room

Clicks and conversions get tracked, but rarely tied back to an actual confirmed reservation, so nobody can say which campaign is worth the spend and which is not.

Campaigns Set Up Once And Never Touched Again

A campaign built two years ago, running on the same keywords and the same budget regardless of season, booking pace, or a rate change last month.

WHAT AN OTA BOOKING ACTUALLY COSTS YOU

The Booking You Could Have Kept, And What It Costs To Win Back

An OTA takes fifteen to twenty percent commission on every booking it sends you, whether that guest searched your hotel by name or found you through a generic search. On a room night worth five thousand rupees, that is seven hundred fifty to a thousand rupees gone before you have paid for housekeeping or breakfast.

Google Ads management for hotels is not about spending more, it is about redirecting some of that commission into ad spend that sends the same guest to your own booking page instead. A well run campaign can win back a direct booking for a fraction of what the OTA would have taken, and unlike commission, your ad spend is a number you set and control every month.

GENERIC ADS SETUP VS OPENSTAYS

See What Changes When Someone Who Understands Hotels Runs Your Ads

Google Ads management for hotels is not the same job as running ads for a shop or a service business. Here is what actually changes.

GENERIC OR FREELANCE ADS SETUP
✕ Clicks often land on your OTA listing, not your website
✕ No tracking tied to an actual confirmed booking
✕ Same budget and keywords regardless of season
✕ Your own hotel name left open for an OTA to bid on
✕ Reporting is impressions and clicks, not bookings
OPENSTAYS AD MANAGEMENT
✓ Every click lands on your own booking engine
✓ Conversion tracking tied to a confirmed reservation
✓ Budget and keywords adjusted with your occupancy
✓ Brand protection checked and set up where an OTA is bidding on your name
✓ Reporting shown in direct bookings and cost per booking

BUILT FOR HOW A HOTEL ACTUALLY BOOKS

Built Around How A Hotel Actually Gets Booked

Good Google Ads management for hotels has to be built around occupancy, seasonality and a booking engine, not a generic playbook used for every kind of business.

Every Click Lands On Your Own Booking Page

Campaigns are built to send a guest straight to your OpenStays booking engine, not a listing where a booking still costs you commission.

Conversion Tracking Tied To A Real Booking

We track an actual confirmed reservation, not just a click or a page view, so you know precisely what a booking through Google Ads costs you.

Your Own Hotel Name, Protected

A dedicated brand campaign makes sure it is your own page, not an OTA, that shows up first when someone searches for your hotel by name.

Budget That Flexes With Your Occupancy

Spend is weighed against your forward occupancy pace instead of running flat all year, pulled back on date ranges that are already pacing ahead of target and pushed toward the weeks further out that actually need more demand.

IS BRAND BIDDING WORTH IT

Bidding On Your Own Hotel’s Name: Strategy Or Just The “Google Tax”?

This is a fair question in Google Ads management for hotels, and one every hotel should ask before spending a rupee on it. If nobody else is bidding on your hotel’s own name, running an ad on it is close to paying Google for a click your website would have gotten for free anyway, which is exactly what people mean by the “Google Tax”.

The reason we still recommend it for most independent hotels is simple: hotel brand names are one of the most heavily contested terms in the industry. OTAs routinely bid on individual hotel names, because a search for a specific hotel converts at a very high rate, and it costs them little to sit above your own website for a name you already own. Search your own hotel right now in an incognito window. If an OTA’s ad shows up above your website, that is a booking you are currently losing for free, before your ad budget even enters the picture.

Good Google Ads management for hotels treats this as a diagnostic question, not a default. Before recommending a brand campaign, we check whether anyone is actually bidding on your hotel’s name in your own market. If nobody is, we do not recommend spending on it, since that budget is better used on the searches that are actually bringing in guests who do not already know you. If an OTA is sitting there, defending that click is usually the cheapest, highest-converting booking your ad budget can buy, since it is not really a new customer you are acquiring, it is a customer you already have, being intercepted before they reach you.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

Everything Included In Your Ad Management

One monthly service, set up around your hotel, with nothing left for you to configure yourself.

  • Google Search campaigns built around how guests actually search for your hotel and your area
  • A dedicated brand campaign, once we confirm an OTA is actually bidding on your hotel’s name, not run as a blanket default
  • Google Display and YouTube remarketing for guests who visited your booking page but did not complete a reservation
  • Every ad links to your own OpenStays booking page, never to an OTA listing
  • Conversion tracking tied to a confirmed reservation, not just a click or a form fill
  • Negative keywords set up so your budget is not wasted on unrelated searches
  • Budget adjusted against your forward occupancy pace from the OpenStays calendar, shifted toward the weeks that are pacing behind target
  • Monthly report showing direct bookings and cost per booking, not just impressions
  • A scheduled call to walk through performance whenever you want one
  • No fixed retainer, you pay ten percent of whatever monthly budget you set
  • No lock-in contract, you can pause or stop the service at any time

You do not need to know how Google Ads works to use this service. You set a monthly budget you are comfortable with, and we run the campaigns, adjust them, and report back in numbers that mean something: bookings and cost per booking, not clicks and impressions.

HOW HOTEL ADS ACTUALLY WORK

Google Search Ads And Google Hotel Ads Are Not The Same Thing

Most hotel owners have heard of “Google Ads” and “Google Hotel Ads” and assume Google Ads management for hotels means the same product either way. They are not, and knowing the difference matters for where your money actually goes.

Google Search Ads are the text ads that show up above the regular search results for a query like “hotels in Jaipur near railway station”. This is what most people mean by Google Ads management for hotels, and it is where a well built campaign can send a guest straight to your own booking page before they ever see an OTA listing.

Google Hotel Ads, sometimes called Free Booking Links, is a separate placement that shows a small price comparison box next to your hotel on Google Maps and Search, listing your own rate alongside OTA rates for the same room. Your OpenStays booking engine already supports a Google Hotels integration, and Search Ads and Hotel Ads work well run alongside each other, since one wins the click and the other wins the price comparison.

We are upfront about which of these your budget is going into, because too many hotels have been sold “Google Ads” without ever being told the difference.

WHY A GENERAL AGENCY MISSES THIS

A Hotel Needs More Than A General Ads Agency

A general digital marketing agency can run ads for a restaurant, a clinic or a hotel with the same playbook, which is exactly why Google Ads management for hotels needs a different one.

No Understanding Of OTA Rate Parity

A general agency often does not check what rate is actually being promoted in the ad. Showing a lower rate through Google than your OTA contracts allow you to advertise elsewhere is a rate parity breach, and has nothing to do with how much you bid.

Conversion Tracking Stops At The Landing Page

Most agencies count a landing page view or a click on “Book Now” as a conversion, not an actual completed reservation, so the numbers look better than the bookings really are.

No Concept Of Occupancy Or Seasonality

A hotel already pacing ahead of target for a future date range should not be spending the same amount chasing more demand for it. A general agency running a flat monthly budget has no way to know this.

Your Brand Name Left Completely Unprotected

A general agency rarely sets up a dedicated campaign to defend your own hotel name in search, leaving that click for an OTA to win instead.

BUILT AROUND HOW A HOTEL ACTUALLY RUNS

Built Around How A Hotel Actually Runs, Not A Generic Ads Playbook

Google Ads management for hotels has to fit how a hotel actually operates, on occupancy, seasons and a front desk that is often the one closing the booking.

Budget Shifts With Your Forward Booking Pace

Campaigns are reviewed weekly against your forward occupancy pace from the OpenStays calendar, since a guest searching today is usually booking for a date weeks away, not tonight. Spend shifts toward the future weeks that are pacing behind, not toward or away from tonight’s occupancy.

Push Harder On Weeks That Need It

A future date range that is pacing behind where it should be a few weeks out gets a temporary budget increase, instead of the same flat spend regardless of how bookings are actually coming in.

Phone And WhatsApp Leads Count Too

A guest who calls or messages after clicking your ad is tracked as a lead, not lost, since many hotel bookings still close over a phone call.

Reporting In Bookings, Not Just Clicks

Your monthly report shows direct bookings and cost per booking in plain numbers, not a wall of impressions and click-through rates that mean nothing on their own.

A REAL EXAMPLE

The First 90 Days Of Running Ads For A Hotel

A 28-room hotel in Jaipur came to us with no Google Ads management for hotels in place, spending nothing on ads and relying entirely on OTA listings. Here is roughly how the first ninety days went.

Month one. We set up a brand campaign to protect the hotel’s own name in search, alongside a small search campaign for “hotels near Jaipur railway station” and similar terms. Budget started conservative, about fifteen thousand rupees, while we watched which searches actually produced a booking.

Month two. The brand campaign alone was winning back several bookings a week that had previously gone to an OTA showing up first for the hotel’s own name. We increased budget on the search campaigns that were converting and paused two that were producing clicks but no bookings.

Month three. Direct bookings from Google Ads had grown to roughly forty a month, at a cost per booking well under what the equivalent OTA commission would have been. The hotel increased its monthly budget on its own, once the cost per booking made the case clearly enough that it did not need convincing from us.

COMMON MISTAKES

Mistakes Most Hotel Ad Campaigns Make

We have audited enough hotel ad accounts to see the same handful of Google Ads management for hotels mistakes over and over again.

Sending Ad Clicks To An OTA Listing

Paying for a click that lands a guest on a page where you still pay commission defeats the entire purpose of running ads in the first place.

Bidding Only On Generic Terms, Never Your Own Name

Leaving your own hotel’s name undefended in search is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes we see.

No Conversion Tracking Tied To Actual Bookings

Without this, nobody, including the agency running your ads, actually knows whether the campaign is making or losing you money.

The Same Budget Running Regardless Of Season

Paying the same amount for clicks in your slow season as your peak season wastes money exactly when you can least afford to.

WHY HOTELS CHOOSE US

We Manage Ads For Hotels, Not For Every Kind Of Business

Most digital marketing agencies run ads for restaurants, clinics, real estate and hotels using the same basic playbook, changing little more than the keywords. Google Ads management for hotels is a different job. It needs to understand occupancy, rate parity with OTAs, seasonal demand and a booking engine, not just how to write an ad headline.

We are also the same team that runs the OpenStays booking engine your ads point to, so there is no gap between whoever is running your campaigns and whoever controls the page a guest lands on. If a rate looks wrong or a booking fails on a Friday evening, you are not stuck between two vendors pointing at each other.

Because we already know your occupancy calendar, your rate plans and your booking data through the OpenStays dashboard, we can do things a standalone agency simply cannot, like shifting spend away from date ranges that are already pacing ahead of target, without you having to ask.

WHAT IT ACTUALLY COSTS

What Google Ads Management For Hotels Actually Costs

The pricing for our Google Ads management for hotels service is simple: ten percent of whatever monthly ad budget you set, with no fixed monthly retainer sitting on top of it. If you set a budget of twenty thousand rupees a month, our fee is two thousand rupees, and it scales up or down with you. This fee is separate from, and in addition to, your OpenStays booking engine subscription, which starts at the Medium plan rate. See the pricing page for current numbers. Ad management is an add-on we offer to hotels already running on OpenStays, since your booking engine is where the ad traffic lands and where a booking actually gets confirmed and tracked.

There is no setup fee, no minimum contract period, and no charge for the months you decide to pause spending, for example during your slow season. You can start with a small budget to see how it performs, and increase it once you can see the cost per booking for yourself in your monthly report.

We think this is the fairer way to price the service. An agency charging a flat retainer regardless of your budget or your results has very little reason to work hard for a small hotel spending a modest amount. Tying our fee to your spend keeps our incentive lined up with growing your budget only because it is actually working.

MULTIPLE PROPERTIES

Built For Owners Running More Than One Hotel

Google Ads management for hotels scales across a portfolio too. If you run more than one property, each hotel gets its own campaigns, its own brand protection and its own budget, since a guest searching for one of your hotels has no interest in seeing an ad for the other.

You get one consolidated report across all your properties if you want it, or separate reports per hotel if that is how you manage the business. Either way, budget decisions for one property never quietly affect another.

As you add a new hotel to your OpenStays account, setting up ad management for it is a matter of extending an existing service, not starting a fresh engagement from scratch.

OWNERSHIP AND TRANSPARENCY

Your Ad Account, Your Data, Your Numbers

As part of our Google Ads management for hotels, the Google Ads account we set up is created under your own business, not ours. You own the account, the historical data and the audiences it builds, from day one.

If you ever decide to stop working with us, the account and everything in it stays yours, along with the conversion tracking history that took months to build up. We do not believe in holding your ad account hostage to keep you as a client, the results should be reason enough to stay.

GETTING STARTED

What We Will Need From You To Get Started

Nothing complicated. Most hotels have all of this ready within a day.

  • An active OpenStays booking engine subscription, on our Medium plan (see the pricing page for current rates), or help signing up if you are not on OpenStays yet
  • Your monthly ad budget, even a rough starting number is fine
  • Access to create a Google Ads account under your own business, or an existing account if you have one
  • Your room types, rate plans and current occupancy patterns
  • A few lines about what makes your hotel worth choosing over the hotel next door
  • Photos of your rooms, common areas and exteriors for the ad creatives

If you do not have a Google Ads account yet, we can set one up for you under your own business during onboarding.

CHOOSING WHO RUNS YOUR ADS

How To Evaluate Any Hotel Google Ads Service

Whether you work with us or someone else for Google Ads management for hotels, these are the questions worth asking before you hand over your ad budget.

  • Is conversion tracking tied to an actual confirmed booking, or just a click on a button?
  • Is there a dedicated campaign protecting your own hotel’s name in search?
  • Do ad clicks land on your own booking page, or on an OTA listing?
  • Is the fee a flat retainer regardless of your budget, or tied to what you actually spend?
  • Is there a minimum contract period, or can you pause any time?
  • Who owns the ad account, you or the agency?

If an agency cannot answer the first question clearly, it is worth asking twice before handing over a monthly budget.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What Hotels Typically See In The First 90 Days

Every hotel is different, but with Google Ads management for hotels a pattern shows up often enough to be worth sharing honestly. The first few weeks are mostly about the search campaigns finding their footing, and for hotels where we confirm an OTA is bidding on their name, winning back bookings from guests who were already searching for the hotel by name but landing on an OTA first.

By the second month, the search campaigns around your area and room types usually start producing a steady trickle of bookings, and we start seeing clearly which keywords are actually converting versus which ones are just generating clicks.

By the third month, most hotels have enough data in their monthly report to decide confidently whether to increase the budget, and by how much. We would rather show you real numbers from your own account building up over three months than promise a result before we have run a single campaign.

BRINGING BACK A GUEST WHO ALMOST BOOKED

Google Display And YouTube Remarketing For Guests Who Did Not Convert

Good Google Ads management for hotels does not stop at the first click. Most guests who click through to your booking page do not book on the first visit. They are comparing two or three hotels, checking with whoever they are travelling with, or just not ready to pay yet. Search Ads alone cannot bring that guest back once they have left your site.

Remarketing through the Google Display Network and YouTube shows your hotel again to that same guest as they browse other sites or watch videos over the next few days, with the same rooms and rates they were looking at. This stays inside Google’s own advertising stack rather than adding a separate platform to manage, and it is usually a smaller slice of budget layered on top of Search Ads, not a replacement for them.

This is a genuinely useful complement to search campaigns and is included as part of Google Ads management for hotels. We do not run Meta Ads on Facebook or Instagram as part of this service, since that is a separate platform with its own account, its own audience behaviour, and is better treated as its own engagement rather than folded into a Google Ads budget.

SEASONAL BUDGETS

A Budget That Moves With Your Season, Not A Flat Number All Year

Seasonal awareness is central to Google Ads management for hotels. Most hotels have a clear peak season and a clear slow season, and a flat ad budget running identically through both is money spent inefficiently on both ends.

During peak season, once forward bookings show a date range is pacing well ahead of target, we pull spend back from that window, since the rooms will likely sell through OTAs or organic search anyway, and redirect it to weaker weeks further out. During your slow season, we push harder on the search terms that tend to convert even when demand is soft, since that is exactly when a direct booking, at zero commission, matters most.

This kind of adjustment needs someone watching your occupancy calendar regularly, which is exactly what our access to your OpenStays dashboard lets us do without you having to flag it to us every week.

PROTECTING YOUR SPEND

Keeping Your Budget Away From Searches That Were Never Going To Book

A large share of wasted spend in Google Ads management for hotels goes to searches that were never going to turn into a booking at your property. Someone searching for “hotel jobs in Jaipur” or “cheapest hostel Jaipur” is not your guest, but a poorly configured campaign will still show your ad and charge you for the click.

We build a negative keyword list specific to your hotel from the start, and keep refining it every month as we see which searches are actually producing bookings versus which ones are just draining budget. This alone often recovers ten to fifteen percent of a hotel’s ad spend without changing anything else about the campaign.

The same discipline applies to your brand campaign. We watch for OTAs or competitors bidding on your hotel’s own name, and adjust your bid strategy to make sure your own page keeps winning that click, since it is usually the cheapest, highest-intent booking your ad budget can buy.

BOOKINGS THAT HAPPEN ON A CALL

Counting The Booking That Closed On The Phone, Not Just Online

Good Google Ads management for hotels accounts for this too: a meaningful share of hotel bookings, especially for a group or a longer stay, still close over a phone call or a WhatsApp message rather than a completed online payment. A campaign that only tracks online conversions misses these entirely, and can make a genuinely well performing campaign look weaker than it is.

We set up call tracking on your ads, so a guest who clicks through and then calls your front desk is counted as a lead from that campaign, not lost in the gap between an ad click and a booking made over the phone. This gives a far more honest picture of what your ad spend is actually producing.

WHAT WE ACTUALLY BID ON

Common Searches We Build Hotel Campaigns Around

A hotel ad campaign is only as useful as the searches it actually shows up for. Here is the kind of phrasing we build your keyword lists around.

  • Hotels near [landmark or railway station] in [city]
  • Best hotel in [city] for a family or business trip
  • [Your hotel name], direct booking or official website
  • Hotel near [city] airport with free pickup
  • Budget or 3-star hotel in [city] with breakfast included
  • Hotel in [city] with banquet hall for a wedding or event
  • Same day or last minute hotel booking in [city]

Each of these searches signals a different kind of guest and a different stage of planning. A brand search for your hotel’s own name is close to a guaranteed booking if you win the click. A generic “hotels near [landmark]” search takes more work to convert, but at a much larger volume. We split budget across both instead of putting everything into one basket.

WHY THE LANDING PAGE MATTERS

Why Your Booking Page Affects What You Pay Per Click

Google does not just rank ads on how much you bid. It also scores how relevant and how fast your landing page is, called Quality Score, and a low score means you pay more for the exact same position an ad with a better landing page would get more cheaply.

This is one of the quiet advantages of running ads for a hotel already using the OpenStays booking engine. The page a click lands on is fast, mobile-friendly, and matches what the ad promised, room types, real rates, and a working booking form, instead of a slow generic website or, worse, an OTA page you do not control at all.

A hotel sending ad traffic to a slow or generic page is often paying twenty to thirty percent more per click than it needs to, simply because Google is charging a penalty for a poor landing page experience. Fixing this alone can meaningfully lower your cost per booking without changing a single keyword.

HOW THIS FITS WITH WHAT YOU ALREADY DO

This Replaces Wasted Ad Spend, Not Your Existing Marketing

Google Ads management for hotels is not meant to replace everything else you already do to bring in guests. Your OTA listings, your travel agent relationships, your walk-ins and your repeat guests all keep working exactly as they do today.

What changes is the guest who was already going to search for your hotel, or search for a hotel in your area, online. Right now, that guest either lands on an OTA and books through them, or does not see you at all because you are not bidding on the search. Ad management redirects that specific slice of demand toward your own booking page, without touching anything else that already brings you business.

We also do not promise to replace your OTA revenue entirely, and we would be lying if we did. Most hotels we work with keep a healthy mix of OTA and direct bookings, and simply grow the direct side of that mix month over month, which is a realistic goal rather than a sales pitch.

QUESTIONS HOTELS ASK

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Google Ads management for hotels priced?

It is ten percent of whatever monthly ad budget you set, with no fixed retainer on top. If your budget is twenty thousand rupees, our fee is two thousand rupees.

Do ad clicks send guests to my own website or to an OTA?

Every campaign we run is built to send a guest straight to your own OpenStays booking page, never to an OTA listing.

Who owns the Google Ads account?

You do. The account is created under your own business from day one, and stays yours if you ever decide to stop working with us.

Is there a minimum ad spend or a contract lock-in?

No minimum spend and no lock-in contract. You can pause or stop the service at any time, including for a slow season.

Isn’t bidding on my own hotel’s name a waste of money, the so-called “Google Tax”?

Fair question, and it depends entirely on who else is bidding on your name. If nobody else shows up when you search your own hotel, you are right, running an ad there is close to paying for a click you would have gotten for free. But hotel brand names are one of the most heavily contested terms in the industry, OTAs routinely bid on individual hotel names because branded searches convert at a very high rate. We check this for your hotel specifically before recommending any brand spend, and only run a brand campaign once we can show you, in a real search, that an OTA is already sitting above your own website for your own name.

Does ad spend actually change based on which nights are sold out?

No. A guest searching today is usually booking for a date weeks or months away, not tonight, so ads are never targeted to specific stay dates. What we do adjust is your budget against forward occupancy pace, pulling back from date ranges that are already pacing ahead of target and pushing spend toward the weeks further out that need more demand.

What about Google Hotel Ads or Free Booking Links?

That is a separate placement from Search Ads, and your OpenStays booking engine already supports the integration. We can explain how the two work together on your discovery call.

How do you track a booking that happened over a phone call?

We set up call tracking on your ads, so a guest who calls after clicking your ad is counted as a lead from that campaign, not lost.

What happens to my budget during my slow season?

We usually recommend reducing spend on search terms that stop converting and shifting some budget to Google Display remarketing, rather than pausing entirely, but the decision is always yours.

Is there a setup fee?

No setup fee. On the discovery call we will walk through your hotel and recommend a starting budget, with no charge beyond the ten percent management fee once campaigns are live.

How long does it take to go live?

Most hotels have campaigns live within about a week of the discovery call, depending on how quickly account access and creative assets are ready.

Can this work alongside my existing OTA listings?

Yes. You keep your OTA listings for new discovery and use ad management to win back guests who already know your hotel or are searching your area directly, at a lower cost than OTA commission.

Do I need to already have a website or booking engine?

Yes. Google Ads management for hotels is an add-on for hotels on an active OpenStays booking engine subscription, since your booking engine is where the ad traffic lands and where we track a click through to an actual confirmed reservation. If you are not on OpenStays yet, we can get your booking engine set up first, on our Medium plan (see the pricing page for current rates), and add ad management once it is live.

What happens if I stop using this service?

Your ad accounts, historical data and audiences remain yours. There is no lock-in, and we will help you with a clean handover if you ever decide to move on.
